When a Windows user tries an alternative for the default file manager of Windows, Windows Explorer, he always looks for simplicity and versatility, but with more options and commands available at the least number of clicks possible.
Total Commander does not resemble Windows Explorer because it comes from the branch of the well-known "Norton Commander" ('NC', a widely used file manager for DOS, known as "Midnight Commander" in Linux environments). Under this line, the main concept is the vertically divided two-panel screen, which is very handy and effective at the time of navigating two different directories at once, in the same window. So, the user can switch between left and right panel, and use them as "source" and "destination" of the basic file and directory operations (copy, move, delete, view, edit, create directories, search and replace...) and other useful commands like compress and compare.
Total Commander is an enhanced version for the Windows platform, with really LOTS of options that we have never imagined to find in a file manager, like make FTP and Parallel Port connections, file encoding, a tool for batch renaming files, and many more. We can even download a 16-bit version for Windows 3.1!
Advantages:
- Very complete software.
- Plenty of features.
- Fast to load.
Disadvantages:
- Some users of Windows software may not like the appearance of the main window and some controls because sometimes they look like Windows 3.1 (visually speaking).
